1. Purpose and Scope

This policy establishes clear guidelines for the responsible, transparent, and ethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in the preparation, submission, review, and publication of manuscripts submitted to INTEGRASI: Jurnal Ilmiah Keagamaan dan Kemasyarakatan. This policy applies to all authors, peer reviewers, and editors.

2. Definition of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to computer-based systems or software tools capable of generating, modifying, analyzing, or interpreting text, images, data, or code. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Large Language Models (LLMs),

  • Grammar checkers and stylistic enhancers,

  • Translation software,

  • Data analysis assistants, and

  • Image generation or processing tools.

3. Permitted Uses of AI by Authors

Authors may use AI tools only as supportive instruments, provided that full responsibility for all manuscript content remains with the authors. Permitted uses include:

  • Language editing, grammar correction, and stylistic improvement;

  • Translation of text between languages;

  • Formatting assistance and reference management;

  • Preliminary data visualization or coding assistance (subject to human verification);

  • Summarization of the authors’ own text to enhance clarity.

Note: AI tools must not replace the authors’ intellectual contribution, scholarly judgment, or critical analysis.

4. Prohibited Uses of AI by Authors

The following uses of AI are strictly prohibited:

  1. Generating original research ideas, hypotheses, or theoretical frameworks without direct author intellectual input;

  2. Producing fabricated, falsified, or manipulated data, results, references, or citations;

  3. Writing substantial portions of the manuscript without meaningful human authorship;

  4. Generating peer-review reports, editorial decisions, or responses to reviewers automatically;

  5. Using AI tools to impersonate human authorship or conceal authorship responsibility.

Important: AI systems and tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors, as they cannot take ethical or legal responsibility for scholarly work.

5. Disclosure and Transparency Requirements

Authors are required to transparently disclose any use of AI tools in the preparation of their manuscript.

Disclosure Statement

If AI tools were used, authors must include a formal statement in the manuscript (e.g., within the Acknowledgements or a dedicated Disclosure section) using the following format:

"Artificial intelligence tools were used for language editing and clarity improvement. The authors take full responsibility for the content, interpretation, and conclusions of this article."

Failure to disclose the use of AI tools may be considered a violation of publication ethics.

6. Data Integrity, Accuracy, and Accountability

  • Authors are fully responsible for verifying the accuracy, originality, and integrity of all content generated or assisted by AI tools.

  • AI-generated outputs must be carefully reviewed to prevent:

    • Factual inaccuracies,

    • Hallucinated or non-existent citations,

    • Biased or misleading interpretations.

  • The use of AI does not exempt authors from standard academic integrity policies regarding plagiarism, data fabrication, or ethical misconduct.

7. Use of AI by Peer Reviewers

Reviewers may use AI tools solely for language assistance or text summarization, subject to strict confidentiality. Reviewers are strictly prohibited from:

  • Uploading manuscripts or confidential review materials to public or unsecured AI platforms;

  • Using AI tools to generate full peer-review reports;

  • Relying on AI for evaluative judgments, acceptance decisions, or recommendations.

Peer review remains a human-centered scholarly responsibility.

8. Use of AI by Editors

Editors may use AI tools for:

  • Administrative support,

  • Basic language checks,

  • Similarity screening and plagiarism detection support.

Editors must not:

  • Delegate editorial decisions to AI systems;

  • Use AI to replace scholarly judgment, ethical oversight, or editorial responsibility.

Final editorial decisions must always be made by human editors.

9. Ethical Compliance and Sanctions

Any misuse, non-disclosure, or unethical application of AI tools may result in:

  • Manuscript rejection,

  • Retraction of published articles,

  • Official notification to the authors’ home institutions,

  • Additional sanctions in accordance with Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines.
